Letters From Our Readers

"I need tips on how to sew vinyl into a quilt as part of a traditional star pattern using templates. I would also like tips about using vinyl in paper piecing, in applique and as piping. What specific needle sizes are best to work with? How much more vinyl should I cut to fold over? How about washing and ironing? Hope you get the picture. Many thanks."

Any help out there on this subject? I am strictly a cotton girl. -- Carolyn

"I love the free pattern, Nine-Patch & Four-Patch Stars, in the last time's newsletter. I think it would make an excellent quilt for the Quilts of Valor Program. Thanks for the free pattern."

"I, too, feel very fortunate. I was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago, and fortunately, it was found early during a routine mammogram. One of the ways I plan to 'give back' is to make/donate heart-shape pillows to our local hospital. My surgery was done out of town, and a volunteer had made a pillow for me; it was the best thing ever! Made from fleece or flannel and stuffed with polyester makes it soft, and it just fits under your arm. Sometimes the small things mean the most."

"I would just like to say thank you for last month's free pattern, Nine-Patch & Four-Patch Stars. I am new to quilting and haven't actually finished a quilt yet, but I do love to collect ideas. I have been thinking about a red-and-tan theme since I work at Target and have been looking for a way to re-purpose worn-out work clothes. Finding or purchasing just the right blue fabric will also be a fun challenge. Just as soon as I finish my current project, I plan to begin this one. Just one observation: when I read through the directions that I printed out, there is a reference to a template for the star shape, but no template printed out. I can easily find a star shape to use, but I wanted you to be aware of this gap. Again, thank you for this newsletter, and its wonderful content. I always enjoy reading the tips and comments, and I am tickled that there is a free pattern every month."

Linda,
If you click on the pattern link in Step 5 it should take you to the star template. However, if you have Hotmail, they made some changes a couple of months ago, and we have been unable to find a solution to correct it. -- Carolyn
