Ladybug Table Set

Red, white and blue scraps combine to make this summery tablecloth with matching napkins. Eliminating the batting layer makes it possible to stitch up this pretty set in just a few hours.

Tablecloth Size: 55" x 55"

Napkin Size: 11 1/2" x 11 1/2"

Materials

  • Scraps red, blue and red-and-blue prints
  • 1 1/8 yards dark blue print
  • 5/8 yard dark red print
  • 1 1/8 yards white print
  • 1 5/8 yards 60"-wide white solid or print for backing
  • White all-purpose thread
  • Red and blue rayon thread
  • Blue pearl cotton
  • 2/3 yard fusible transfer web
  • Basic sewing supplies and tools, chalk pencil or fade-out pen

Instructions

Step 1. Cut a 36 1/2" x 36 1/2" square white print for center panel. Cut two strips each 2 1/2" x 36 1/2" and 2 1/2" x 40 1/2" dark blue print for inside borders.

Step 2. Sew the 2 1/2" x 36 1/2" dark blue print strips to opposite sides of the center panel; press seams toward strips. Sew the 2 1/2" x 40 1/2" dark blue print strips to the remaining sides; press seams toward strips.

Step 3. Cut red, blue and red-and-blue print scraps 6" long in varying widths from 1 1/2"-2 3/4". Join scrap pieces along 6" sides to form four strips at least 43" long referring to Figure 1. Trim each strip to 5" x 40 1/2" referring to Figure 2.

Step 4. Sew a 5" x 40 1/2" pieced strip to opposite sides of the center panel; press seams toward strips.

Step 5. Cut four squares white print 5" x 5". Sew a square to each end of the remaining 5" x 40 1/2" pieced strips. Sew these strips to remaining sides of the center panel; press seams toward strips.

Step 6. Cut and piece two strips each 3 1/2" x 49 1/2" and 3 1/2" x 55 1/2" dark red print. Sew the shorter strips to two opposite sides and longer strips to remaining sides; press seams toward strips.

Step 7. Cut a 55 1/2" x 55 1/2" square from backing fabric. Lay on the pieced top with right sides together; stitch around outside edges leaving an 8" opening on one side. Turn right side out through opening; hand-stitch opening closed. Press completed pieced top.

Step 8. Prepare applique patterns using pattern pieces given. Trace shapes on the paper side of fusible transfer web referring to patterns for number to trace. Cut out shapes, leaving a margin all around.

Step 9. Fuse shapes to the wrong side of fabric scraps as directed on patterns for color. Cut out shapes on traced lines; remove paper backing.

Step 10. Draw a flight path on the center panel of the pieced top referring to the Placement Diagram and photo of project for positioning suggestions.

Step 11. Hand-stitch a long running stitch along marked line using blue pearl cotton; remove chalk pencil or fade-out pen marks.

Step 12. Arrange Ladybug bodies and heads and hearts on center panel referring to the Placement Diagram and photo of project for positioning suggestions. When satisfied with arrangement, fuse shapes in place referring to manufacturer's instructions.

Step 13. Mark antennae lines using chalk pencil or fade-out pen referring to patterns for shapes. Hand-stitch a running stitch along marked lines using blue pearl cotton; remove chalk pencil or fade-out pen marks. Fuse a small heart at the end of each antenna line. Fuse five medium hearts randomly along the embroidered flight path referring to the Placement Diagram for positioning suggestions. Fuse a large heart in each white print corner square.

Step 14. Machine satin-stitch around each fused shape using matching or contrasting rayon thread in the top of the machine and white all-purpose thread in the bobbin. Press well to finish.

Step 15. Cut four squares dark blue print 12 1/2" x 12 1/2". Turn under all edges 1/4"; press. Turn under again; stitch to hem edges.

Step 16. Using medium hearts cut in Steps 8 and 9, position and fuse one medium heart shape diagonally on one corner of each hemmed square; fuse in place.

Step 17. Using red rayon thread in the top of the machine and white all-purpose thread in the bobbin, machine satin-stitch around each heart shape to finish napkins.
