Letters From Our Readers

We have a few quilters needing a bit of advice. If you can help them, I would gladly pass on the information.

"In the Jan. 4, 2013, newsletter, readers wrote that they make a variety of comfort items with scraps. It would be nice to have access to patterns for some of these items. I belong to two quilting groups who are always looking for ways to make things that will bring comfort to others. Thanks." -- Carol W.

"I was given a lot of leftover fabric from a decorator's shop, mainly large flowered material from upholstering. My idea was to make quilts out of it, but I was told that would not work by a quilter. I am not thinking of anything intricate, but the large block type for giving to organizations. Do you have any ideas on how to use this? I am at a beginner level when it comes to quilting. I have made a couple of tied quilts like my grandma used to make." -- Diane W.

"Happy New Year, Carolyn! When you said that emerald was the Pantone color of the year, I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't because I'm a 'green' person, it's because they chose a 'normal' color that a person could work with! I have subscribed to your newsletter for a long time now and have never made a quilt yet. I've wanted to, but a lack of funds has prevented it for the time being (it's a long story). Anyway, I had a suggestion for a quilt with such a regal color. I thought that a bedspread-size quilt with a Chinese symbol in the center in emerald would be striking. I don't know what the particular symbol is called, but it's a round-shaped one. Then perhaps smaller symbols could be put in the corners. The background material would be up to you. I know you wanted suggestions, and I just thought maybe you'd like one from a real novice. I love the newsletter. Thank you for your time, and I hope I can be a quilter soon." -- Peggy R.

I hope Peggy's letter will inspire you to play along this year and create a quilt that is inspired by a single color. If you choose to experiment with this idea, I would love to hear about your journey.
