Introduction

Vintage quilts can be found almost everywhere. You find them at resale shops, garage sales and in attics. The patterns used, for the most part, are the same as today's, but the reasons for making them and the types of fabrics used have changed.

Today, many quilts are made with quality cottons and coordinated collections from a quilt shop that specializes in quilting fabrics and supplies. Vintage quilts were made with whatever fabrics or out-grown clothing were available.

When you really look at a vintage quilt, you have to appreciate the quiltmaker's ability to create beauty with limited supplies, and the skill it took without all the fancy rulers and gadgets we have today. Quilting has evolved from a necessity to an art.
