Why do quilters quilt? That was the question asked by a recent reader, and the answers keep coming.
"Why do we quilt? For me, it is creativity. I cannot draw or paint, other than rough outlines. But I can pick colors and patterns, and I can sew and quilt a project that makes my heart sing. It is my personal expression of my love of color and form."
-- Etta S.
"For me, quilting is the expression of my soul."
-- Kay F.
"The question was 'Why do I quilt?' The answer to that is so easy. I used to watch my great-grandmother quilt when I was a child. I always felt safe then, and I loved to watch her put together the colors. I should say that I love colors -- all colors. Whether I am doing cross-stitch, ceramics or quilting, it's always about the colors."
-- Verna H.
"I got interested in quilting because I wanted to show off a few 'flowers' that I did in liquid embroidery in 1982. They were on a bed sheet, and I wanted to build a quilt around it. Now I'm hooked. I love the construction of the quilts. I love the design aspect. It all fits with the way my brain thinks. It's like engineering."
-- Joanne D.
"The question was 'why do quilters quilt?' I have only been quilting maybe two years, and I have found that it is a very good distraction, plus it's a challenge. I used to sew clothing, but now there is no need. I have found designing and construction are the things I love to do. One's mind can wander to all kinds of places; then, too soon, it's time to go pick up my grandson at school or feed the chickens. Time sure does fly when one is having fun quilting! This has become my main hobby. With fabric, one can design anything."
-- Doris C.
"Why do I quilt? It's a total obsession. I love the colors, the textures and the hunt -- the hunt for the perfect fabric!"
-- Shannon C.
