Are you ready to get started on Stash Buster III? It's the latest Quilter's World Mystery Quilt! Dig through your scraps for light, medium and dark warm tones, 4" squares or larger, being sure to gather the total yardages listed below. Choose light, medium and dark warm tones with backgrounds that will contrast well with the white/cream scraps and each other. Cutting instructions will begin in Week 2.
Now, get ready to have some fun!

Fabric Requirements
For the mystery piecing:
- Variety light warm tone scraps to total 1 yard for Light Block
- Variety medium warm tone scraps to total 3/4 yard for Medium Block
- Variety dark warm tone scraps to total 7/8 yard for Dark Block
- Medium to dark brown print scraps to total 1/2 yard for stems
- Variety white/cream scraps to total 1 3/4 yards
For Finishing:
We suggest purchasing this yardage after completing the piecing in Week 8.
- 1/2 yard for first border
- 1 3/8 yards for second border and binding
Week 2
Select your light warm tone scraps and press flat. Cut pieces as instructed, label and store in a bag or container labeled as Light Block. This will keep your pieces together until you construct your block. A large resealable plastic bag or small plastic box with lid work very well. Week 3
Select your medium warm tone scraps and press flat. Cut pieces as instructed, label and store in a bag or container labeled as Medium Block. This will keep your pieces together until you construct your block. A large resealable plastic bag or small plastic box with lid work very well. Week 4
Select your dark warm tone scraps and press flat. Cut pieces as instructed, label and store in a bag or container labeled as Dark Block. Week 5
Each of the blocks are constructed in the same way but, with different color palettes. The medium warm tones will tie the light and dark warm tones together but still have enough contrast to bring a natural gradation to your color scheme. Let's make some Medium Blocks! Step 1 From the Medium Block pieces, select eight D triangles, four C triangles, two E squares and one each A, B and F square. Stitch a C to D triangle and two D triangles together as shown in Figure 1; repeat to stitch four C-D and two D-D units.
Place an E square on F and stitch on the marked line as shown in Figure 2; trim seam to 1/4" and press E to the right side. Repeat on opposite corner of F to complete an E-F unit referring to Figure 3.
Arrange the C-D, D-D and E-F units with the A and B squares as shown in Figure 4 and stitch together in rows. Press seams in opposite directions in adjacent rows.
Stitch rows together as arranged and referring to Figure 4. Press seams in one direction. Repeat all instructions to make 10 Medium Blocks. |
Week 6
Let's make some Light Blocks! Repeat the block construction with your light warm tones. These colors will bring light and diversity into your quilt. Step 2 From the Light Block pieces, select eight D triangles, four C triangles, two E squares and one each A, B and F square. Stitch a C to D triangle and two D triangles together as shown in Figure 5 from the Medium Block instructions; repeat to stitch four C-D and two D-D units.
Place an E square on F and stitch on the marked line as shown in Figure 6 from the Medium Block instructions; trim seam to 1/4" and press E to the right side. Repeat on opposite corner of F to complete an E-F unit referring to Figure 7 from the Medium Block instructions.
Arrange the C-D, D-D and E-F units with the A and B squares as shown in Figure 8 and stitch together in rows. Press seams in opposite directions in adjacent rows.
Stitch rows together as arranged and referring to Figure 8. Press seams in one direction. Repeat all instructions to make 10 Medium Blocks. |
Week 7
Raise your hand if you’re ready for Week 7 of the Quilter’s World Mystery Quilt! Let's make some Dark Blocks! Repeat the block construction with your dark warm tones. These colors will give your quilt depth and a place for your eyes to rest after enjoying the brighter light warm tones. Step 3 To make Dark Blocks, select eight D triangles, four C triangles, two E squares and one each A, B and F square. Stitch a C to D triangle and two D triangles together as shown in Figure 1 from the Medium Block instructions; repeat to stitch four C-D and two D-D units.
Place an E square on F and stitch on the marked line as shown in Figure 2 from the Medium Block instructions; trim seam to 1/4" and press E to the right side. Repeat on opposite corner of F to complete an E-F unit referring to Figure 3 from the Medium Block instructions.
Arrange the C-D, D-D and E-F units with the A and B squares as shown in Figure 4 from the Medium Block instructions and stitch together in rows. Press seams in opposite directions in adjacent rows.

Week 8
Let’s get started on Week 8 of your Stash Buster III Mystery Quilt! Only one more week to go after this! This week you can exercise your creativity while arranging the blocks in rows. There is no wrong way! Lay the blocks out, then step back. Doesn't seem right? Rearrange and step back again. Create a secondary design or just a great mix of colors. Step 4 Arrange the blocks in seven rows of five blocks each. The blocks can be arranged with same-color blocks creating diagonal rows or in a more haphazard arrangement. When arranged as desired, stitch blocks together in rows; press seams in adjacent rows in opposite directions. Stitch the rows together to complete the pieced center; press seams in one direction. Next week we put it all together. You will need your finishing fabrics for Week 9 if you have not already purchased them. |
Week 9
Give yourself a pat on the back because you made it to Week 9, the final week of our Stash Buster III Mystery Quilt! We’re so glad you joined us! Now it’s time to put it all together! Step 5 From first border fabric, cut six strips 1 1/2" by fabric width; join strips on short ends to make one long strip. Press seams open. Cut strip into two 63 1/2" G strips and two 47 1/2" H strips. Cut four 3 1/2" K squares from remainder of first border fabric. Set aside. Stitch G strips to opposite long sides and H strips to top and bottom of pieced center completed in Week 8 referring to the Placement Diagram. Press seams toward G and H.
Step 6 From the second border and binding fabric, cut six strips 3 1/2" by fabric width; join strips on short ends to make one long strip. Press seams to one side. Cut strip into two each 65 1/2" I and 47 1/2" J strips. Cut seven strips 2 1/4" by fabric width for binding. Stitch I strips to opposite long sides of quilt referring again to the Placement Diagram. Press seams toward I. Stitch a K square to both ends of each J strip; press seams toward J. Stitch a J-K strip to top and bottom of quilt referring to the Placement Diagram; press seams toward J-K. Layer, quilt as desired, bind edges and enjoy!
